Artists Speak is back!

Women’s rights and freedoms are under pressure in the U.S. and around the world, and artists are no exception.

Two years ago, more than 1,200 women, trans and non-binary visual artists told us about their lives and careers in the first Artists Speak. That research gave us a rare picture of their economic and professional realities — findings which we shared with artists, funders, museums, policymakers, and others who have the power to shape the field.

Now we want to know: what has changed — and what hasn’t?

Anonymous Was A Woman (AWAW), in partnership with SMU DataArts and journalist Charlotte Burns, is launching the second Artists Speak survey, and we hope you will take part.

This time, we’re returning to some of the most important questions from 2024 to see what has shifted over the past two years, while digging deeper into new issues that have emerged, from AI and other technologies, to changes in policy and funding, so we can better understand what artists need now.

TAKE THE SURVEY

Women, non-binary and trans visual artists of all ages are welcome to complete the survey. It takes approximately 15–20 minutes to complete (and you can save your progress and return to finish if needed). Your responses are completely confidential, and findings will only be reported in aggregate; any quotes used will be anonymized to protect your identity. The survey is open until  January 3, 2027 .

Your participation matters. The more artists we hear from, the clearer a picture we can build about the realities of making and sustaining a practice as an artist today — and where change and support are most needed.

The findings will form the basis of a new Artists Speak report and a new digital resource zine to be published in Fall 2027. Participants can also opt in to receive early access to the publications.

If you would like to hear more about the research and why we are conducting it, you can also join us for an Artists Speak webinar on 18 November at 12pm EST.
